Angel Tree Statistics indicate that children of inmates are more likely than other children to break the law, engage in damaging relationships and demonstrate anti-social behaviour - all of which can lead to imprisonment as a juvenile or adult. Today’s children of inmates are in danger of becoming tomorrow’s inmates unless we work together to show them a hopeful future. The number of children with a parent in prison is ever expanding. There are an estimated 14,500 children affected by their parents' imprisonment in NSW in any one year (source: SHINE for Kids) In 1982, former prisoner Mary Kay started Angel Tree in the United States. Whilst an inmate, she noticed many women saved toiletry packs to have something to give to their children for Christmas. Their children in turn cherished the gifts simply because they had come from their mother. Thus, the idea of Angel Tree was born: Providing gifts to children on behalf of their incarcerated parent, through sponsors. Angel Tree is a powerful programme which reaches inmate’s children with the love of Christ during this painful period of separation. Angel Tree provides a valuable opportunity to connect with those children and their families at Christmas. "...This is a beautiful thing. Enabling inmate mums and dads to give a gift to their child helps keep relationships going and brings joy into an often fragmented and sad family situation." - Rev'd Rod Moore, Chaplaincy Co-ordinator Corrective Services NSW
