Restoring Families
Through Camp for Kids we realised the benefit of a ‘Children and Families Worker’ to follow up and care for the families of prisoners with a specific focus on the children.

Our Children and Families Worker Sally Graham has been providing home visits, liaison with service providers and linking families with church communities within their local areas on a weekly basis since October 2008. Children not only benefit from Camp for Kids but also mentoring through The Way mentoring program where they can learn more from positive Christian role models. Others are joining local youth groups, and attending services and holiday club programs.

As a part of Prison Fellowship’s mandate to be a reconciling community we desire to meet families where their need is greatest, in the home. This is a holistic approach; being real and restoring dignity to hurting families and joy to the faces of little children who are otherwise powerless over their situation.

‘Thank you for all your support and the Christmas hamper. I’m taking the children to see their dad in prison next week. We’re all hoping for a fresh start when he is released soon.'

‘Wow, I can’t thank you enough; I was just so jaded trying to get help elsewhere. I can’t believe that you were able to help with my girls.'

‘Felt ashamed as a mum to say I couldn’t read so I couldn’t fill out the forms. When you offered to help get the kids school shoes I couldn’t believe it at first , that you would all be so kind, thankyou so much.’

‘I love my new backpack and uniform; it’s cool, just like the other kids.’

‘My dad got me boys’ shoes. I didn’t want to wear them. Thanks for my new girl shoes ‘cause I’m a girl.’

There are almost 400 children presently listed on our database in addition to the children who receive annual Happy Birthday presents, but at this point are not receiving extra help.

Due to seed funding provided by a Christian Foundation we can employ Sally for two days per week for three years which finishes October 2011.  If you would like to contribute to Restoring Families directly by supporting the costs associated with the Children and Families Worker you can nominate any amount as a one off or a monthly partnership amount.
